On Thursday, February 9, the Spartan Swim and Dive team competed in the 2023 Centennial League swim and dive meet. The team finished in 5th place with Manhattan claiming the 2023 Centennial League championship title.

Swimmer Logan Woydziak (10) and diver Alex Allemang (11) earned second-team all league from their places in the competition. Athletes earning the honorable mention league title went to Shane Anderson (11), Tyler Luthi (11), and Will Walker (10).

In diving, Allemang finished in 2nd place. Swimming had 2 top-5 team finishes from the team of Woydziak, Ian Navarro (11), Luthi, and Walker competing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the team competing in the 200-yard medley relay composed of Landon Bird (11), Broden Podrebarac (11), Anderson and Navarro.

From a coaching standpoint, Jamie Dawson felt the team performed at a high level.

“We did well at league this year and most of our boys had a best time in something that they swam. We also got better times in some of the events we were trying to get into the state meet, which was a huge accomplishment,” Dawson said.

For the athletes whose season came to a close at league, many are reflecting on their season.

“My favorite moments from this season were forming a bond with the team, pushing each other to our limits, and being able to congratulate my teammates for breaking their records,” Podrebarac said.  “My team has come a long way from the start of the year and we all push each other and look out for one another like a family.”

Spartan athletes Woydziak, Anderson, Luthi, Navarro, and Walker will be competing at state Friday at the Shawnee Mission School District Acquatic Center. Both the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays qualified for state.

“I’ve really enjoyed seeing our relays decrease time throughout the season,” Navarro said.
